According to the National Safety Council, one in every eight drivers will be involved in a motor vehicle accident this year. That may mean you! Are you prepared? Would you know what to do and what questions to ask? Here is a list of 10 easy steps that you should take in the case of an accident:
Stop your vehicle as soon as it is clear, safe and legal.
Call 911 to report the accident.
Make a first aid check of all persons involved in the accident.
Mark the scene of the accident with flares or reflective triangles if needed.
Collect the full name, insurance information, and home address of all other drivers involved in the accident. You should also provide your information to the other driver(s).
Ask to see the other driver’s license and write down the number.
Exchange insurance company information. DO NOT discuss “fault” or make statements about the accident to anyone but the police.
Make a simple diagram then write a summary of the accident with as many details as possible – the vehicles involved; the time of accident; and weather conditions; where vehicle occupants were seated and each vehicles direction of travel and travel lane.
Get a copy of the police report of the accident.
Call your insurance agent or carrier as soon as possible.
