Bob and I have had a checking account compromised last year. A criminal acquired our debit card information and attempted to make an on-line purchase. We have no idea of how they got our information but the debit card does leave our sight at many restaurants or we may have been collateral damage from a data leak at a business. The attempt on our account was not from Windsor Heights, West Des Moines or anywhere near the Des Moines area but was based in New Jersey. Our bank quickly corrected the problem and the criminal did not get anything for their trouble. We were lucky…but that is not always the case.
Identity Theft Coverage can offer you peace of mind and we recommend that everyone add Identity Theft Coverage to their homeowners’ policy. It is a low cost endorsement that will make your life much easier if someone steals your identity.
It depends on where you buy your Identity Theft Coverage, but typically the policy provides some reimbursement for:
- Expenses related to the id theft up to a specified limit
- Lost wages incurred due to the recovery process
- Expenses for children or elder care
The more comprehensive policies typically provide for:
- Help line assistance
- Case management services
The best way to protect yourself against identity theft is to prevent it. Safeco Insurance has a great list of steps you can take to reduce the chances of it happening to you. Click here to see the list.
